The legendary Gavarnie Cirque has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 for its natural and cultural value. The less well-known but equally resplendent and impressive Estaubé and Troumouse are gems of scenery and culture in what is incontestably the most famous place in the Pyrenees.
The Gavarnie Cirque is the birthplace of Pyreneism and is adored by romantics, with its wall reaching 3 248 m (at the Pic du Marboré), and its famous waterfall (the biggest in Europe). The group it forms with the Brèche de Roland (a gap supposedly carved out by the sword of Charlemagne’s nephew, Roland de Roncevaux) surprises visitors and always inspires admiration. Estaubé and Troumouse, further East, are wilder and more pastoral, but just as gigantic.
