The 12C church, rebuilt in the 17C. It replaced the Benedictine abbey-church that was founded at the beginning of the 11C in 1022 by Duke Sanche V of Gascogne.
From Roman inspiration as can be seen in the vestiges both inside and outside of the edifice, it has undergone major modifications between the 12C and the 13C to meet the needs of an increasing number of pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
