In these valleys churches are of modest size, built according to architectural principles that are similar to that of the surrounding buildings (rectangular plan, south-facing façade, enclosed cemetery adjoining the building just like the houses’ yards).
They are particular in two respects : the belfry (wall with two semicircular bays or quadrangular with a slate spire), and the chevet (bare semicircular or polygonal). However the modest exterior often contrasts with the rich and interesting interior decor and furnishings.
It is well worth going in to admire the baroque retables, some of which are famous. They decorate the choirs and chapels as much as low-reliefs, statues and paintings of the Way of the Cross do. |
