Birthplace of Henry IV, who was born here in 1553, the old feudal fortress of the Béarn viscounts was converted into a royal palace by Marguerite of Angoulème, François I’s sister, and Henry II of Albret, her husband, heirs to the crown of Navarra, and was entirely restored in the 19th century by Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III.
In an exceptional setting, the museum brings together a unique historical and artistic collection.
The royal apartments fitted out and furnished in the middle of the 19th century, constitute a remarkable expression of the decorative art of the July Monarchy and the Second Empire, and present, among other things, a somptuous collection of royal tapestries from the 16th to 19th centuries, as well as the rich collections brought together since 1945 to evoke the story and the legend of the most popular king of France. |
