St-Savin abbey-church (16 km from Lourdes)
|
Now a parish church, the romanesque church of Saint-Savin was, until the French Revolution, part of a Benedictine monastery which was very influential in Bigorre. What remains of this abbey is the abbey-church and the chapter house. An important sanctuary of the Pyrenees, it still houses the relics of Saint Savin, a hermit-monk of Spanish origin. But another characteristic of this abbey-church is the abundance of ancient works of sacred art, which show the wealth of the monastery and the devotion to Saint Savin.
To be seen :
The romanesque sarcophagus of Saint-Savin, the 13th/14th century Christ on the cross, the 14th century wooden ciborium, the 15th century wooden paintings of Saint Savin’s life, as well as the Renaissance organ, dating from 1557 and restored very recently. The Treasure houses, in particular, two romanesque Virgins, Saint Savin’s 15th century shrine, as well as a few canopies from the cloister. |
