The sanctuary of Betharram (15 km from Lourdes) |
Bétharram est un lieu culturel et spirituel vous y Bétharram is a cultural and spiritual centre where you can discover: A Marian Sanctuary from the 17C, a unique masterpiece of Baroque art in Béarn. A Calvary and 15 evangelical stations, low-reliefs by Alexandre Renoir - neo-Gothic architecture from the 19C. A reliquary chapel of St Michel Garicoits, expression of the religious art of the mid-1920s.
A museum housing various collections : numismatics, bank notes, mineralogy, prehistory, lace, objects from Béarn, 2 seismographs… Bétharram is a very old place of pilgrimage (14C).
At the time of the apparitions in 1858, under the order of her bishop, Monseigneur Laurence, St Bernadette came here to meet St Michel Garicoits, founder of the Order of the Sacré-Coeur of Bétharram priests.
